Review: The 42nd Annual Daytona Turkey Run

By: Nathan Wertheimer

On Thursday, November 26, 2015, I attended the 42nd Annual Daytona Turkey Run at the Daytona International Speedway. This was my first time to this event at the speedway, which is a much different speedway than a NASCAR race day event. This event is for the whole family along children. There is much to see and do at the Turkey Run for the half-day or whole day.

When planning your trip to this event remember to bring these items. Don’t forget the camera, windbreaker, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, earplugs (if needed), dress casually, and extra cash. Some vendors do not accept credit cards, but there are some ATMs on property for a fee.

When traveling from Orlando to this event there is road construction on both Interstate 4 and Interstate 95. Watch for the road construction signs. After getting off the interstate 95 stay in the right lane and it will take you to right onto Williamson Blvd and left into the Westside of the speedway. There are two different parking area which will depend on if you are an attendee or a show car. There is plenty of free parking available on the outside of the speedway.

Once you have a paid ticket getting into the speedway starts the real fun. I recommend getting an event map at the one of the information booths to make your day a little easier. Plan your day by dividing the speedway into section starting at the farthest area first. If you need assistance moving around there are scooters for rent and also some shuttle available.

I started in the show car area, which is in the east side of the infield of the speedway. Many show cars were still arriving into the infield. Domestic cars out number import cars inside the show car area. There are roughly 6,000 who pack the infield on a busy day. From cars to trucks there were many early model vehicles. Some vehicles had custom engines and paint jobs. Many of the vehicles owners were lounging by their vehicle to answer any questions anyone had. Some of the owners could tell you long stories on how they purchased the vehicle to facts of what made there vehicle unique. Everyone had a story to tell. One owner told me this is not a cheap hobby to get into too.

Another area of the event was the antique and vintage area in the yellow garage area. There was a famous “The Monkeys” red vehicle. This was the highlight of my day. The red vehicle on display was a replica, which was shown on one of the TV episodes. Another famous vehicle was the “The Fastest Woody” vehicle on display. Many of these vehicles one could get up close, but you could not sit inside the vehicles.

After finishing the antique and vintage area in the yellow garage was the fair style food vendor. One of the vendors had corn dogs, French fries, and much more for a reasonable price. I purchased the French fries and they were hot from the fryer and very good.

After eating a snack, I went back to the show car area to check out more vehicles on display. Another vehicle that stands out is the dropped down black tow truck marked “Danburry Auto Body.” This vehicle fascinated many spectators. I checked out even more vehicles and then called it a day. I did not have a chance to see everything at this event.

I would highly recommend this event is any car lovers and for family fun. If were you have bored over the Thanksgiving weekend this is the event for you. If you missed this event there is a smaller version of this event coming to Spring 2016 at the same location. Stay tuned for more details. Roughly about forty theatergoers and a few of Jurica’s closest coworkers showed up to see her live on stage. Even Chief Meteorologist Tom Terry, and Anchor/Reporter Carla Ray, from WFTV were even in attendance too.

The Cabaret Series was performed in the lobby of the Winter Park Playhouse where there is plenty of space to enjoy this musical performance. The musical songs were divided up into four seasons such as Fall, Winter, Springs, and Summer. Between songs she gave the audience a perspective of why she picked the song she was singing. Jurcia hit many high tunes with voice and was very entertaining to watch and listen.

One of the audience favorite song was “Let it rain, let it rain” and even the audience got a chance to sing along with Jurica. At the end of the Cabaret everyone gave her a standing ovation for her performance. Jurica will be back on stage in the near future. Stay tuned for more information.
