Photo Tip Series – Photographing A Monster Jam Show

Written by: Nathan Wertheimer

The next Photo Tip Series I will be writing about is photographing a Monster Jam Show. The Monster Jam Show is produced by Feld Entertainment. It is a big hit with many fans that love trucks. Why not capture some great memories of this show. Below I wrote an article how to photograph this event and get some cool images.

First, one needs to buy a ticket. It is recommended to buy a ticket for the front row with out anyone seated in front of them. Sometimes it may not be possible to get front row seating. One may have to photograph over someone’s heading and or in between people. I have experience this for myself while on assignment. Depending on the set-up of the stadium and arena will depend on where you want to sit. I have sat in the first row in the middle and on the corners too.

Another thing to check with the venue is the use of a camera with inter-changeable lenses. Some venues may not allow one to use their SLR cameras. Then one needs to go to plan B. Plan B could be using a small point and shoot camera just like using a big SLR camera. Another thing that might be a problem is the lighting conditions. If you’re photographing at night outside in a stadium one will want the ISO to be 5000+ or higher. The lower ISO will result in dark images. However, some images maybe color corrected too.

There are a variety of images one will take at this show. Catch vehicles crashing into one another, vehicle in mid air, vehicle doing donuts, and much more. Sometimes, these Monster Trucks even loose their tires too. Each show is always different and never scripted.

Also, any photos one takes at a Monster Jam Show are copyright by Felds Entertainment. This means one can’t sell these images without permission from Felds Entertainment. However, one can post their images of this show on social media accounts for all to see. Felds loves the free advertising of their events.
