Mark your calendar now for Monday, May 27, 2019, from 10am – 12pm, for the annual Sanford Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance Ceremony. Sanford produces one of the largest Memorial Day Parades in Central Florida, which is located right in the heart of Downtown Sanford. This is a free event and everyone is welcome. Rain or shine this event goes on.
It is a short travel from Downtown Orlando to Downtown Sanford. Check your GPS for the best route to this event. Plus, there is free street parking near Fort Melon Park area, the residential and business areas, and the waterfront area. It is best to arrive early for the best parking available. One may encounter street closures for this event. There will be detours in some streets. After the parade ends streets will open back to normal. Heavy vehicle traffic maybe close to the start of the parade and at the end of the parade too.
Before leaving your home, check the weather condition for the day of event. To prepare for this event, it is recommended to bring a lawn chair, sunscreen, wear comfortable clothing, hat, photo/video camera, poncho, umbrella, and a good book to read while waiting.
Don’t miss the sights and sounds of Sanford’s Memorial Day Parade. It starts near Fort Mellon Park and goes westward then turns onto Palmetto Avenue. The Memorial Day Parade will start at 10pm. It is recommended to get there early to reserve your seat on the street side. The most crowded area are the middle and end of the parade route. There will be many floats and marching groups in this parade. One will see a miniature submarine (which is a black torpedo), a quarter front section of a military jet, military vehicles, Fire Department trucks, Law Enforcement vehicles, a few Junior ROTC groups from various branches, local politicians, even some former military personnel, and much more. Some organizations maybe handing out free goodies to the spectators. This parade may take one hours from start to finish depending on the pace of the parade.
Following the parade there will be a Remembrance Ceremony at 11am at Veterans Memorial Park on the waterfront. Look for the huge tent where attendees will be seating and or standing. Make sure you get a ceremony program to follow along with the ceremony. It is a great reference guide for a series of events. This ceremony will last thirty minutes to one hour.
There will be many people participating at this ceremony along with the local US Navy Sea Cadets too. Plus, there will be some special guests at the ceremony such as a few Tuskegee Airmen. See a living part of history. The will be a variety of speakers at this ceremony. Some possible speakers are Seminole County Sheriff, the Mayor of Sanford, Sanford City Manager, Seminole County Veterans Affairs liaison, former U.S. Military personnel, Chaplin, and much more. Both Seminole County Sheriff’s Office and Sanford Police Departments will have their honor guards present. Some speakers may change without notice.
During the ceremony the bell will be rung, Law Enforcement formation and volley shots, bugler playing taps, and the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol Unit boats leaving the area along with Aviation Unit fly-over. Following the ceremony, there is a meet and greet at the front of the stage area.
It is worth your time to bring the family and come on down and remember those who lost their lives for the United States. Plus, it is is a great educational opportunity for many young people to learn about history. For more information please visit www.sanfordfl.gov/index.aspx?page=20&recordid=5637 .
