2019 AdventHealth Watermelon 5k Race in Winter Park Preview

The summer is here and what better time to have some fun then run in a hot 5k race in the morning. Mark your Calendar for the AdventHealth Watermelon 5K race on Thursday, July 4, 2019, at 7:30am, in Winter Park. This race was formerly known as Florida Hospital Watermelon 5k Run. If you have never run in a 5k before, it is a great challenge for new and seasoned runners. Sorry, there are no participation metals given out to all racers at the finish line at this race. This race is open to all levels. Plus, this race benefits the Track Shack Youth Foundation, which is a local, 501c(3) organization that promotes health and fitness with an emphasis on youth programs. Rain or shine, the race goes on.

Don’t forget to bring some canned food to this race. They are collecting non-perishable food items for the Orlando VA Medical Center’s VSO Food Pantry. Their goal is 1000 food items! Your food donation very much needed.

It is a quick drive from Downtown Orlando to Downtown Winter Park. There is plenty of parking in the Winter Park in the public parking garage and residential streets. For additional parking please check out New York Ave. at W. Canton Ave (free parking)
2) South Park Avenue at Lyman (paid parking) Parking is on a first come, first serve basis. Some roads maybe closed during this event. Watch for detours.

Reserve your spot in this race now. Don’t wait till the day of the race to reserve your spot. Registration fills up fast. It is anticipated that it will sell out closer to race day. The cost for this race for Children are $20 per child for ages 17 year old and under. Adults 65 and over are $20 per person. Adults 18-64 are $30 per person. Before the race day, pick up your Bib and e-Race Packet. This is usually done a few days for the race. To pick up your bib and shirt at Track Shack or at the race site on race morning. If you have never participated in a 5k race before it is recommended to check with your doctor to see if you’re in good health to participate in a 5k race. Then got out and buy some new running shoes and start training a few weeks in advance of a race. It is worth the challenge of making through a race to say that one has accomplished it. Once you get hooked, you will want to participate in more 5k races. Most new race participants do a combination of running and walking to make it through a race with an average time of 40-50 minutes to complete a 5k race. Track Shack motto is safety is our first priority. Check event website to view all restrictions.

The sights and sounds of the Watermelon 5k run will take runners through beautiful up-scale Winter Park residential community. This beautiful 3.1 mile course starts on Park Ave. and runs through some of the best streets of Winter Park. This route is a USATF-certified course. All the streets are paved or have brick roads. There will be water stations along the way. Be courteous to other runners. Lower runners please stay right on the course. Anyone running with a stroller should be at the back of the pack. It is advised not to wear audio headphone or ear buds while on the course.

Before a runner hit’s the finish line, you’ll see spectators cheering you on. Plus, runners will notice professional photographers at the finish line to taking your photo while one crosses the line. It is unknown at this time, which professional photographers will be onsite at this race. Stay tuned for more information.

After the race there is a post-race party, still around for the race awards, food, and other activities. Don’t miss the awards ceremony for the top 10 winners in both male and female runners.

Plus, there will be a watermelon contest. 3 men & 3 women will be chosen to participate in our Watermelon Eating Contest. Contest will begin at 8:30 am. All interested participants may sign up on race day at the Track Shack tent. Contestant names will be randomly selected and announced at 8:20 am. All 6 contest participants receive a Corkcicle canteen. Top male and female winners receive festive watermelon merchandise.

After the watermelon contest someone will be speaking about the Military Staycation. To wrap up the day, there will be a Kids’ Race. Once your at home a couple days later download your official race certificate from the Track Shack email. It will detail how you did in the race.
