This year’s showstopper is a 1968 Challenger 2 Streamliner (Lot R411). Dubbed “Challenger 2,” this twin-Hemi-powered streamliner holds the certified record run as the fastest naturally aspirated, piston-powered vehicle in history—an automotive milestone that was 50 years in the making. Designed and built by Hall of Fame driver, self-made engineer and prolific promoter Mickey Thompson in collaboration with Kar Kraft of Brighton, Michigan, Challenger 2 was Thompson’s second land speed car intended to break the overall piston record. In 1960, Thompson had become the first American to break the 400 MPH barrier, piloting his Challenger 1 streamliner to 406.60 MPH at Bonneville to exceed Englishman John Cobb’s one-way record of 402 MPH. Unfortunately, the car broke on its return run, robbing Thompson of the coveted two-way record, but it ultimately set the stage for his next attempt. One of the highlights at this year’s Mecum Auction in Kissimmee is the 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 Convertible (Lot R240). Multiple awards and solid documentation attest to the quality and exclusivity of this low-mileage, matching-numbers 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 Convertible. It has been awarded Bloomington Gold Certification, was a participant in the Bloomington Gold Special Collection and was inducted into the Bloomington Gold Hall of Fame. It has additionally earned the National Corvette Restorers Society Top Flight Award and the coveted Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals Triple Diamond Award, which also denotes MCACN Concours Gold. It is documented in part with the original Protect-O-Plate, and the NCRS Historical Document Service has validated its tank sticker and window sticker. Add this example’s triple black color scheme into the mix and the result is unquestionably one of the most desirable Corvettes of any era. Another highlight is the 2019 McLaren Senna Sports Car (Lot R433). This 2019 McLaren Senna is Serial No. 2 of 500 produced in the latest addition to the British manufacturer’s Ultimate Series of exclusive hyper-performance automobiles, a completely bespoke marvel fully deserving of its very special designation. This one-of-one McLaren Senna showcases its exposed carbon fiber body work through transparent Fux Green paint, which is a special mix that can only be ordered by Michael Fux.
Perhaps the best means of appreciating the Senna’s overwhelming magnificence is by a brief comparison to the car that begat McLaren’s entire road car lineage to this point in time, way back in the waning days of the 20th century: the absolutely fabulous F1.
