Photo Tip Series – How to Photograph Going Through a Car Wash

By Nathan Wertheimer

Most people get a car wash every now and then. If you are like me, I have an unlimited monthly plan at my local car wash place. Do you get bored going through a car wash then try this? Take out your cell phone camera and start photographing away. I will go into more detail on settings and what to shoot in this article.

When photographing through a carwash please put the camera setting on auto focus, adjust the EV meter, burst shoots, and set the ISO correctly. You may have to try different settings until you find the right one. This is trial and error.

Here are my settings from “A Better Camera” app on my cell phone. Shoot single and or burst setting, Auto Focus (AF), and ISO on Auto. For more information on “A Better Camera” app please visit the Apple Store and or Google Play Store.

Once you past the pay station the real fun starts. Take out your cell phone camera and click on the “A Better Camera” app. Place your camera setting on above information. This should be done prior to going through the car wash. Once your vehicle in positioned in the camera on the tire belt then start photographing away.

Let the fun begin. Take image from the entrance of car wash, soapy windows, giant roller bush coming towards window, blower blowing off water from windshield, interior images, and selfie while in the car wash. Watch for glass reflections when taking a photo. Experiment to see what you can come up with.
