Patriot Day: A National Day of Service and Remembrance – City of Sanford

Patriot Day – A National Day of Service and Remembrance, marking 20 years since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, will be observed with a special, multi-agency Remembrance Ceremony at 10 AM on Saturday, September 11, 2021 in Veterans Memorial Park in Sanford, Florida. Retired NYPD Sergeant Nancy Rosado, one of the many first officers on the scene at ground zero on that fateful day, will provide the Keynote Address.

“We are dependent on our first responders every day; those in uniform that answer the call to serve despite the risk. This ceremony is both a remembrance of heroes we have lost, and a call to action for all citizens to serve the community in honor of those who no longer can,” said Mayor Art Woodruff.

The Master of Ceremonies will be the City of Sanford’s Chief of Police, Cecil E. Smith.  Chief Smith, known for his community-policing efforts, volunteered to emcee the Ceremony explaining, “It is very important to remember those forever lost, as well as those whose lives were forever changed on that terrible day while promoting solidarity in our community.”

The Ceremony will also include community leaders from several local first-responder agencies: Seminole County’s Sheriff Dennis M. Lemma, Sanford’s Fire Chief Craig Radzak, Orlando Sanford International Airport Police Chief Thomas Fuehrer, Winter Springs Police Department, Oviedo Police Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Office and others.

Veterans Memorial Park is located at 110 Seminole Boulevard, Sanford, FL.  Following the Ceremony, Susan Simonelli, State President, for the Florida State Elks Association invites the community to attend a cookout at the Sanford Elks Lodge 1241 at 1006 E 2nd Street in Sanford.
